Welcome to the GCB 2006
The annual German Conference on Bioinformatics is organized on behalf of the Special Interest Group On Informatics in Biology of the German Society of Computer Science (GI) in cooperation with the German Society of Chemical Technique and Biotechnology (Dechema) and the German Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (GBM). The conference is an excellent opportunity to present cutting edge bioinformatics research - new methods as well as applications - to a multi-disciplinary audience. The GCB especially invites contributions from outside Germany. The conference language will be English.
Areas of interest
Areas of interest at the GCB include
- Protein-Protein Interactions (thematic focus)
- Structural Bioinformatics and Drug Design
- Sequence Analysis and Comparative Genomics
- Genomics and Metagenomics
- RNA/DNA Structure
- Transcriptomics, Metabolomics, and Proteomics
- Biochemical Networks and Systems Biology
This year's GCB will have a special focus on Protein-Protein Interactions
(PPIs) and we specifically encourage submissions related to this topic.
PPIs are fundamental for allmost all biological processes and can be
analyzed on a wide range of levels, from the molecular level to the level
of systems. The thematic focus aims at highlighting new developments in
this area.
The focus is not limited to specific computational techniques or biological applications. Scientists applying bioinformatics in life science related research are especially encouraged to present their work at the GCB.
Important Dates
GCB 2006 will take place from 20-22 September 2006 at the
Eberhard Karls University Tübingen, Tübingen, Germany.

Submission Types and Format
The GCB allows submissions of the following types:
- Long Papers
Long papers should have up to ten pages and will be published in the conference proceedings (published in the "Lecture Notes in Informatics" series
). They will be judged by quality, originality, and relevance. The program committee will select up to ten outstanding papers for publication in Bioinformatics (fast track).
- Short Papers
Short Papers should report on recent biological findings, new computational methods, or new software tools.
They should be submitted as an abstract of at most two pages (including references) and will be judged by the importance and novelty of the findings and relevance to the conference audience. Selected Short Papers will be chosen for oral presentation at GCB.
Short Papers will appear in a separate abstract book.
- Poster Abstracts
Posters should present recent scientific work in any of the
areas specified above. Poster abstracts should not exceed one page including
references. Abstracts of accepted posters will appear in a separate abstract book.
- Software Demos
Software demos allow the demonstration of software of particular interest to the
bioinformatics community. Proposals for a demos should be at most two pages describing
the software, briefly mention applications and discuss why it is of particular interest
to the community. A limited number of software demos will be selected by the program
committee. These will be assigned a 25 min time slot (in parallel to one of the poster sessions)
to present the software.
- Tutorial Abstracts
Tutorials should present theory, applications or software related to bioinformatics.
Tutorials will be held on September 19th in the afternoon (before the official conference start).
Please submit a 2-3 page abstract covering the topic, relevance and the scope of the presented
material, maximum number of participants as well as necessary technical equipment.
Please format your submissions using the formatting templates of the GI Lecture Notes in Informatics series.
LaTeX and Microsoft Word templates for submissions are available from the GI
website.
Submissions will only be accepted electronically through our
submissions system.
